| Tenerife
is often referred to as the "Island of eternal Spring"
due to the Passat winds which provide a good and balanced climate
the whole year round with barely noticeable changing seasons. The
huge Volcano, Mount Teide, Spains largest mountain, dominates
the island. It has a big effect on the weather, the South being
warmer than the North, with its lunar like landscapes where at a
height from over 2.000 meters it could even snow. North of the island
is therefore much greener with abundant vegetation. To the middle
of the island there are vast areas of natural stunning beauty.
The capital of Tenerife is the second most populated
city of the Canary Islands with more than 200,000 inhabitants. Tenerife
has been growing in popularity ever since a second airport was built
in the south some 20 years ago. Its expansion has seen it develop
into a major tourist area.
Playa de Las Americas and Los Cristianos are Tenerife´s
major tourist resorts. Hotels and apartments are surrounded by shops,
nightlife, bars, restaurants, entertainment, golf courses and a
wide range of water activities.
20 minutes from the airport is Los Cristianos
- once a quaint fishing village, is now one of Tenerife^s favourite
holiday haunts, popular with families is provides a relaxing family
holiday. it still has much of its original charm and provides 2
excellent beaches. All along the resort is a pedestrian area, with
a wonderful choice of shops, bars, childrens play area and great
restaurants. There is little night life here, and the bars and restaurants
close by midnight. However it is only 5 minutes by taxi to the more
lively Playa de las Americas.
Playa de Las Americas is Tenerifes
most popular resort. It has many beautifuly beaches which provide
numerous water sports. There are a wide variety of shops, cafes,
bars and clubs and n endless choice of restaurants of all types.
This resort is famous for its nightlife where you can party 'till
dawn (and beyond)! This is not an deal for young families who may
prefer the more relaxed atmosphere of Los Cristianos..
Puerto de la Cruz is Tenerifes oldest
resort and situated on the north side of the island. Although the
weather is good, it does have slightly more rain than south of the
Island. It is a large resort but more relaxed than Las Americas
to the south. Nightlife consists mostly of live entertainment with
the many excellent bars and restaurants. There is only one beach
here, but the large 8 acre lido, will attract many.
Ferries go daily on trips to the other Canary Islands - a trip to
La Gomera, a small quiet Island, takes just over an hour.
