| Lanzarote
Lanzarote is the least mountainous of the Canary
Islands and the most eastern of the seven major Canary Islands (Canarian
archipelago) and is situated very close to the African coast, north
of Fuerteventura. It is called 'Conejera' by the islanders, and
is also known as the island of 100 volcanoes although it actually
has more than 300 volcanoes, some of which have still been active
in 18th and 19th century, leaving great parts of its surface are
covered with ashes and lava. Arrecife and Teguise, are the island's
old and new capitals. The Island is now cultivated with large plantations
of fruits and vegetables. In the region of Geria you will find vineyards
between volcanic craters.
Lanzarote houses the longest Volcanic Tunnel in
the world, Cueva de los Verdes, which is over 7 km long and offers
a large number and variety of beaches, some with white sand, some
with black:
Playa Blanca - An excellent beach for relaxing
holidays.
Las Coloradas - Small bays and turquoise sea, great for sports
fishing.
Punta del Papagayo - Beautiful landscape and fine golden
sand.
Playa Quemada - A beautiful part of the coast line with rich
vegetation.
Puerto del Carmen - A wide beach with thermal spa in tropical
surroundings.
Playa Grande - Another lovely beach.
Playa de los Pocillos - Impressive volcanic landscape and
a small settlement in typical style.
The island enjoys an average temperature of 22ºC
all year-round due to its location in the Tropic of Cancer. The
average temperature is 24° in August and 17° in January
and is basically a dry climate with little rain.
North of the Island, houses are situated in the
greenest area of the island with an abundance of palms - a place
of tranquillity and peace. The south of the island benefits from
a landscape that is dry and arid, and is sunnier than the north,
with long and beautiful beaches.
The waters around Lanzarote support a large and
varied population of marine species. Fish such as Barracuda, Grouper
and Stingray frequent the reefs around the coast, while Hammerhead
Sharks are found around the islet of Los Lobos. Whales, Dolphins,
Turtles and Flying Fish can often be seen during a Ferry Crossing
or Boat Trip.
There is huge variety of food available in Lanzarote.
Fish is fairly predominant and local dishes such as 'Pescado a la
sal', fish baked in salt, and 'Sancocho Canario', a stew made with
dried fish and potatoes can be found in the restaurants along with
Fresh Tuna Steak, Calamari, Octopus and other Spanish seafoods.
The Island also sports many fiestas throughout
the year.
